What to pack for the Camino de Santiago?
I walked 10 days of the Camino Portugués at the beginning of September, so if you’re planning to go another Camino in a different season the packing list will look quite different. However, I was really happy with my bag since I didn’t carry anything unnecessary.
I squeezed everything into my Burton Annex (28l) bag, which is not the best backpack for hiking because the back system is not breathable, so my back was sweating all the time, but for ten days it was completely fine.
socks (2 pairs)
flip flops (1)
trecking shoes (1)
I was washing my clothes by hand every second day, it was quite warm so I didn’t have any problems with drying my clothes and I think it’s much better than carrying every piece of clothing multiple times.
I used the shampoo bar also as soap and as washing powder for my clothes, as I was washing them by hand. Carrying one thing instead of three makes more sense when you have to carry everything on your back.
credit card (2), ID, transport card, insurance card
camera + charger
phone + charger
water bottle (one stainless bottle 750ml and one plastic bottle 500ml)
waste bag (raincoat for my bag, since I don’t have one)
It’s always better to carry more water than you need, but there are plenty of places where you can refill your bottles, so no need to carry more than 1,5 liters.
The only thing I didn’t use even once was the charger for my camera because I wasn’t using it very much, the power bank I used only once and I would leave it at home next time (but I also used my phone only for maps, google, and calls).
Did I miss something? No. Many people carry a first aid kit, painkillers, different creams, vitamins… Since there are pharmacies in almost every town you pass I wouldn’t take anything you’re not used to using on a daily basis.
Also, I really recommend you not to carry any books, you can always download one into your phone just in case, but carrying one with you is nonsense if you ask me. And trust me, you won’t have that much time for reading as you might think.
